photographs reproduced in this volume are the work of one man--George
Lytle Beam--and span a time period of more than 40 years--from 1892 to
1934. Products of a
cumbersome 8"x10" view camera except in three instances, they present a
tour along the lines of the all-steam D&RG Railroad in Colorado
between Denver and
Grand Junction, Colorado. Carefully selected from the
prolific output of this
unrecognized company photographer, the pictures are intended to display
unusual or little
known historic aspects of the natural features and the works of man in
served by Colorado's pioneer transportation enterprise.
The explanatory text
accompanying the illustrations is the work of another
longtime employee of the railroad. A Denver native, Jackson Thode was
employed in the
Accounting Department as a Waybill Sorter in 1936. When he retired as
Chief Budget Officer
of the company in 1978 he could look back upon a career which included
Secretary to a number of the railroad's top executives, including
President G.B. Aydelott,
many years of happy association with fellow employees, and gratifying
study devoted to that venerable business institution.
